We are excited to update you on the progress of the first phase of our Reno AirLogistics Park project. We have accomplished a major milestone with the first wall tilt on July 8th and 9th on our 470,000-square-foot cross-dock concrete tilt-up Building 2. This milestone showcases our team’s dedication and hard work maintaining the schedule, advancing us towards our envisioned completion of a state-of-the-art logistics facility. The team is set to begin the second half of the building tilt on Friday, July 26th.

Additionally, the first phase includes the expansion of Moya Boulevard and the construction of a new half-mile, four-lane section extending onto Airport Property, along with reconfiguring the Industrial Circle intersection. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Michael Dermody, Pearce Dermody, and John Ramous from Dermody Properties; Aurora Ritter and Mark Berg from RTAA; Art Sperber, Joel Grace, Kitty Jung, and Jennifer Cunningham from the RTAA Board of Trustees; and Ken Rice, Mark Story, and Michael Russell from United Construction for their onsite visit on July 8th to witness the wall tilt.

On March 2nd, Dermody Properties and Locus Development Group as the project Developer team and United Construction as the Design-Builder were honored with awards for NAIOP Northern Nevada Industrial Park of the Year (Park at McCarran) and Industrial Build-to-Suit of the Year (Building 1 Ames). Since the NAIOP CRE Awards event was not held in 2023, the 2024 event was held to recognize projects completed in 2022 and 2023.

With the sheer size and scale of this development, United Construction people drove this project to successful completion over the 2-1/2-year project development timeline. This project was designed and built during the pandemic and broke ground just as supply chain issues started causing long lead times for various equipment and materials and the subsequent unpredictable material cost escalations.

Our deepest thanks and appreciation go to Locus Development Group (Joel Grace) and Dermody Properties (John Ramous) for selecting United Construction as their Design-Build partner on this remarkable project. We also thank the Ames, InnoPak, Candle Science and Fidelitone companies that occupied all the buildings as initial tenants.

Numerous United Construction team members who were responsible for successfully delivering these facilities deserve our utmost recognition include Audrey Mackey, Carrie Dyer, Casey Gunther, Jeremy Kearns, Chuck Brown, Dylan McAninch, Pete Brunner, Paul Laird, Sandy Penny, Catherine Bernauer, Chris Bennett, Keith Deutscher, Glady Robinette, Ken Rice, Leman Jones and Mark Byars.

United Construction has over 45 years’ experience designing and building industrial and manufacturing facilities, and for the Park at McCarran development was able to assemble the best project management/control team, consultants, vendors and subcontractors to successfully navigate and mitigate the project regulatory, permitting, schedule and financial challenges that were encountered on the project. This is what United Construction always does best, day in and day out for and with our customers.

Congratulations everyone!

We are excited to spotlight one of our outstanding team members who goes above and beyond each day. Please check out the questions below to get to know more about United Superintendent, Nick Crawford!

Can you give us a quick background on your career progression?

I joined the Carpenters Local 971 Union as an apprentice in 1997 while working for a local cabinet shop as a finish carpenter. I quickly worked through all of my Apprenticeship classes graduating my Apprenticeship in 2000’ at the top of my class earning the Ben Earl Jones Gold Hammer Award. I ventured into the world of concrete where I would spend 6 years building tilt ups in the field as a carpenter. While working at Lucky Concrete I mentioned to my foreman I had the desire to become a superintendent and he said if that’s the case you need to get on with a General Contractor and learn as much as you can. I got hired on with Clark & Sullivan, and then moved to West Coast Contractors were I was able to run my own work. It was in Vegas that I got a call to come on board with United Construction and get back to working close to home, and after being on the road for 5 years, it was an opportunity I could not pass.

Tell us a bit about what you like to do outside of work.

Outside of work we chase our children around in sports. Between my wife Katie and I, we have 5 children. I have Jarrett who is 23 years old, Nicole is 22 Years old, Nick Jr. is 17, Derek is 14, and Emily Grace is 11. Nick Jr. is a junior at Spanish Springs High School and plays varsity baseball & travel ball, Derek Goes To Doral Academy and runs track and cross country, and Emily Goes to Doral Academy & plays club soccer for MVLA. I also have two grandchildren, Mac who is three years old and Levi who is three months old. We have a three year old Great Dane named Tank, and a pit bull named Whiskey that keep us busy as well. We enjoy spending time as a family camping and fishing, and my wife Katie and I spend our free time on our 2020 Harley Ultra Limited seeing the country side on two wheels.

Tell us about a pivotal moment in your career.

The best thing I ever did was join the Carpenters Union where I received my training and got to work with some great men. The second best thing I did for my career was leave the Union where I was able to further my career as a superintendent and run work.

What’s the day-to-day of your role like?

My day starts with a healthy mind and body at the gym from 5AM-6AM. Then immediately to the jobsite where I spend most of my time planning, reviewing drawings and coordinating key scopes of work with subcontractors. Anyone who has spent time in my job trailers knows I am a little OCD and that I spend a lot of time reviewing drawings and planning for my projects. As a superintendent, we spend a lot of time in meetings and problem solving for others.

What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on to date?

I think the USAC building was the most challenging and exciting given the size, space and type of construction. My next project, the Dermody Office Building, will be the most challenging one yet.

How did you get into construction as a career path?

I thought I wanted to be an architect early on so I took some CAD classes and architecture classes before I realized it was working with my hands and building things that was what made me happy, and when I heard a local cabinet shop was looking for apprentices I jumped at the opportunity to go build things.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Find something you enjoy doing in life and find a way to make money doing it and it will never seem like work.

On 3/6/23 United Construction obtained the Certificate of Occupancy for the Hamilton Company Clean Room Project located on Edison Way. The Hamilton Company Clean Room Project consisted of a 3-story, 64,916 square-foot concrete tilt-up and steel framed structure with a state-of-the-art clean room located on the first floor. The building will include injection molding machines and packaging automation for medical-grade pipette tips. The capital investment for the building and equipment signifies Hamilton Company’s continued and significant investment in northern Nevada.

The Hamilton Company Clean Room Project was managed by a fantastic team of United Construction professionals that delivered the project under budget and on schedule. Construction of the project was led by Superintendent Nick Crawford and Assistant Superintendent Justin Brunner, Project Manager Robert Felstead, Project Engineer Harlee Annis, Project Administrator Yajaira Medina, Accounts Payable Ariel Mooney, and Preconstruction Project Manager Zach Caron. The Hamilton Company project representative was Brian Slenker who helped lead the project to a successful delivery.

Nick Crawford discloses “This project started with the razing of two older buildings at the site, then the construction of a new 3-story building on a tight land-locked site with an existing drainage channel running beneath it. There were numerous logistical challenges on this site, including lifting 90-ton concrete wall panels with a 330-ton crane on a very tight site, none of which would have been made possible without the great work of our United Construction Team and our local engineers, designers, and subcontractors”.

Michael Russell United Construction CEO adds “Congratulations to our team for obtaining the Certificate of Occupancy for the Hamilton Company Clean Room project! The new 3-story high-tech facility will support and enhance Hamilton’s development, manufacturing, and customization of precision measurement devices, automated liquid handling workstations, and sample management systems business. We are honored and proud to have been selected by Hamilton Company for this important design-build commission, and to deliver this project with Hamilton Company as our third major project working together, previously completing several other site improvements, building, and tenant improvement projects on Hamilton’s campus over the last 10 years. Thank you Hamilton Company for selecting United Construction for this amazing project, and the United Construction project team for achieving this huge project milestone.”
